The Iowa Board of Medicine has filed charges against a psychiatrist who used to practice in Spencer. Dr. Paul Dean Anderson hasn’t practiced medicine since June of 2007.

The Iowa Board of Medicine filed documents in late May that allege Anderson’s abuse of illegal substances could impair his ability to practice medicine with "reasonable skill and safety." Anderson is accused of growing marijuana in his home. In addition, officials allege Anderson has a long history of hallucinogen abuse which prompted an extended episode of drug-induced paranoia.

The board received other troubling reports, too, including an accusation that Anderson engaged in sexual misconduct with one of his patients about 15 years ago. The board has scheduled a hearing for Anderson’s case on July 7th in Des Moines.
