Food bank sees increase in donations, increase in need

The non-profit group that provides food to dozens of pantries and shelters across western Iowa and eastern Nebraska is seeing a big boost in donations — and in demand. Brian Barks, spokesman for the Omaha Food Bank, says donations are up 10%, but the need for food has risen 30%. Barks says one reason for the jump in demand is the growing popularity of a program that targets low-income children.

“We went from about 16 schools last year serving 11-hundred kids, to this year, 26 schools and well over two-thousand.” The food bank’s backpack program gives empoverished children a backpack full of food on Fridays to ensure they have enough to eat over the weekend. On Mondays, the child brings the backpack back to school, they’re collected by the food bank and refilled so they can go home with a child again on Fridays.

“It sends meals home over the weekend for kids who are at risk of hunger,” he says. Barks says many people will donate non-perishable food items to the food bank, but others will simply donate cash. He says both are welcome, and as for cash, the agency knows how to stretch a buck.

Barks says, “A simple dollar donation is worth $14 of distributed food because of our buying power and what we do here at the food bank.” The Omaha Food Bank expects to distribute between five-and-seven-million pounds a food this year, reaching 300-thousand people on both sides of the Missouri River.

Transportation Commission adds more bridge projects to construction plan

The state Transportation Commission added $34-million in bridge projects to the five-year transportation plan Tuesday using money from the governor’s I-JOBS program. Department of Transportation spokesman, Norm McDonald, says there’s now a total of $50-million in bridge projects.

He says the 55 projects include $35-million  for 27 replacement projects, and there are 28 rehabilitation projects. McDonald says $34-million  worth of projects were moved up in the five year plan. The other $16-million  goes to new projects. McDonald says this will help the state make progress on addressing the numerous bridges in the state that need work.

McDonald says they currently have 124 total bridge projects developed that are “structurally deficient” or “functionally obsolete.” He says they have 190 proposed bridge projects that like to work on that include 120 that are functionally obsolete, and 70 structurally deficient bridges. McDonald says the bridges that are functionally obsolete are generally not big enough to handle today’s traffic.

McDonald says the bridges are most often too narrow as they don’t have sufficient lane width, shoulder width or enough vertical clearance. McDonald says they hope to take bids on some of the projects in October. The $750-million I-JOBS program includes $250 million for transportation projects. You can see the entire five-year road plan on the D.O.T.’s website.
