Iowa looks to stay unbeaten at Madison

The 11th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes will try to stay unbeaten when they visit Wisconsin in the Big Ten. The Badgers suffered their first loss a week ago at Ohio State . John Clay leads the Badger’s power ground attack that averages just over 200 yards per game. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says it seems like Wisconsin is leading the conference in rushing every year and that’s why they are always good.

As an outsider looking in, he says the Badgers are probably a little more comfortable with their passing attack this year. Ferentz says senior quarterback Scott Tolzien gives the offense more balance, and is a winner. He says the Wisconsin coaches have to be really pleased with the way Tolzien is playing.

The Badgers have won 23 of their last 25 games at home. Ferentz says a record like that means it’s a tough place to play, but more importantly it’s a good team that you are playing. Ferentz says they’ve already played in a tough environment, and can handle that, the main thing is being able to handle the Badgers.

ISU looks for ways to pressure Baylor on defense

The Iowa State Cyclones host Baylor in their annual homecoming contest. The Cyclones have lost two straight games and coach Paul Rhoads wants to see improvement from the defense. It begins with a better pass rush. Rhoad says they are not capable of putting on a lot of pressure because that leaves too many one-on-one matchups in the secondary. He says they have to find a better way of generating pressure with a pass rush.

Rhoads says even though Baylor has lost quarterback Robert Griffin for the season due to a knee injury the Bears still have big play potential. He says they still have several skill players with good speed and he says that is something his team lacks.

Rhoads says the Cyclones need a better pass rush from the defensive line and use their blitzes wisely. He says there are only so many ways you can rush the passer with four people, so they have to pick and choose when they do.

UNI faces toughest conference test in SIU

The two favorites in the Missouri Valley Football Conference race meet in Cedar Falls as UNI hosts Southern Illinois. UNI is ranked third in the country, Southern Illinois is fifth and both enter 3-0 in conference play.

UNI coach Mark Farley says it is a test and it is always back and forth, so they don’t need homecoming to make it a big game. Running back Larry Warner leads the Saluki offense by averaging nearly six yards per carry. Farley says Warner has a very good offensive line and a good quarterback. He says their no-huddle offense tries to keep you off balance.

There has been a lot on the line when these teams have met in recent years and Farley says this is no different. He says the two teams over the past years have been on course to do things at the end of the year and it always ends up as being a one or two point game.

Gas prices go up as supply drops

The state agency that monitors gas prices says Iowans are paying a few pennies more per gallon this month. Jessica Zopf, spokesperson for the Iowa Office of Energy Independence, says the average price for a gallon of unleaded fuel mixed with 10%. ethanol stands at $2.37. That’s up from $2.34 one month ago.

“It’s not exactly the best news that fuel prices are up, but it is the first time since about mid-August that we’ve seen this type of an increase,” Zopf said. On average, Council Bluffs has the cheapest gas prices among the 11 biggest cities in the state. Motorists in Council Bluffs are paying about $2.28 per gallon. The highest prices are in Iowa City at $2.44 per gallon. Statewide, gas prices are much lower than October 2008.

“A year ago, about this time, we were about 40-cents higher,” Zopf said. The slight increase in pricing this month is blamed on a decline in fuel supplies. Zopf says energy analysts are split on where prices might head next and many were surprised with this month’s numbers.

“The current supply that we have went down, but because refineries are not exactly operating at full capacity, there would still be that leeway with ramping it back up to full capacity,” Zopf said. “So, they were not anticipating the price to be increasing.” Diesel fuel, on average, $2.61 a gallon in Iowa. That’s down a penny from the September 15 survey.

Branstad into “overdrive” to pursue “bigger calling”

Terry Branstad

Terry Branstad

Former Governor Terry Branstad has resigned from his job as president of Des Moines University to pursue a “bigger calling” in 2010.  Branstad plans to travel to all 99 Iowa counties to talk with Iowans about running for a fifth term as governor.

“I’m humbled by the thousands of people that have written or emailed or contacted me and urged me to run for governor,” Branstad said this afternoon.  “I want to go out and talk to those people and talk to others across the state to get their ideas, to get their thoughts on what we can do.”

Culver to have “candid” talks with unions about state worker pay

Governor Chet Culver

Governor Chet Culver

Governor Chet Culver says no government employee in the state should expect a pay raise in the current economic environment. Culver suggests it may be time to reopen negotiations between his executive branch of state government and the unions that represent state workers and consider salary reductions for the state workforce.

”We have signed contracts that we will honor and talk about, perhaps,” Culver told reporters this morning.  “So, it’s premature to know if we are going to change those agreements.”
