An “Iowa Poll” released this weekend by The Des Moines Register shows Governor Chet Culver faces an uphill battle in his bid for reelection next year.

Only 40 percent of the Iowa voters surveyed last week said they approve of Culver’s job performance. The newspaper’s pollster also matched Culver, a Democrat, against two potential Republican rivals, and those who were surveyed favored both Terry Branstad and Bob Vander Plaats over Culver.

Culver is running campaign ads on television which tout his management of state government.  In public appearances, Culver vows not to raise taxes and he promises to make even deeper cuts in state government.

Iowa loses basketball opener

The Iowa basketball team came into the season with low expectations but even so, the season got off to an alarming start on Sunday night. Texas-San Antonio opened the second half with a 14-0 run and went on to post a 62-50 win in Iowa City. It is Iowa’s first season opening loss since 1978 and it had been 46 years since the Hawks lost a home opener.

The Hawks hit just 34 percent for the game, including 18 percent from three point range. Iowa coach Todd Lickliter says they hit only 5 of 27 from three point range and he says it will be tough if they shoot that poorly. The Hawks won’t have much time to regroup. They host A Duquesne team on Tuesday night that opened the season on Friday with a victory over Nicholls State.

Lickliter says Duquense is probably better than San Antonio, as they played in the NIT last year and he says they are really good. He says if they play good defense they will be okay, they just need to find a way to get comfortable with shooting the ball.

Freshman Eric May led Iowa with 13 points.

Anita man dies in accident

A western Iowa man is dead, another injured, after a single-vehicle rollover accident Sunday morning in Cass County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1999 Chevy Cavalier was traveling east on Boone Road, about three-miles northeast of Anita, when for reasons unknown, the car went out of control and overturned into the south ditch.

Two of the vehicles occupants, 22-year-old Brandon Jeffrey Hacker, and 18-year-old Callyn Scott Vincent Pollock, both from Anita, were ejected from the car as it rolled. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt. Both men were taken by Anita Rescue to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, where Hacker died from his injuries.

A report on Pollock’s condition was not available late Sunday afternoon. It’s not clear which of the men was driving the car, and the accident, which happened at around 3 A.M. Sunday, remains under investigation.

Casinos take steps to address H1N1

A couple of the managers of casino in the state say they are aware of the H1N1 virus, but it is not an overriding concern. Joe Massa, general manager of the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, says the have taken notice of the disease and taken precautions.

Massa says they are using hand sanitizers and doing more cleaning in public areas of counters and slot machines because of the flu.

Massa says casinos had already had some hand sanitizers out anyway for those customers who had concerns before the H1N1 outbreak. He says they also work with employees to keep them from being a source of the flu. Massa says they require people who are ill, or have a fever to stay home. He says they have areas where employees can be checked for a fever and sent home if they have a problem. Massa says they try to keep up on every potential problem, and H1N1 is no different.

“It’s there and we think about it, it’s not an overwhelming concern, there’s so little information really out there to deal with it and what you’re supposed to do,” Massa says. He says everyone is obviously waiting for the H1N1 vaccine and they offer seasonal flu vaccinations to employees. At the Isle Casino Hotel in Waterloo, Bari Richter says they take much the same approach.

Richter says they have additional hand sanitizers out to help prevent the spread of disease. She says they have also changed their attendance policy to be sure employees stay home if they are ill, so they don’t spread H1N1 or the seasonal flu. Richter says it’s natural to take an interest in the potential to spread H1N1.

Richter says, “Anytime you have something that is addressed so often in the media, you tend to be more diligent, and more just aware of it, I think we all are much more aware of it,” Richter says. She says they try to do the right thing as soon as they have the information to act on it. Richter and Massa say the use payout tickets used now for machines instead of coins, helps minimize the possibility of spreading the flu and other diseases in the casinos.
