Iowa City superintendent leaving

The superintendent of schools in Iowa City is leaving the district for a new job working for schools in western Iowa. Lane Plugge has been the Iowa City School District Superintendent since 1999. He’s planning to leave the district at the end of June to become the chief administrator of the newly formed Green Hills Area Education Agency in Council Bluffs.

The agency serves a 15-county area of 51 school districts comprised of nearly 44,000 students and 3,900 teachers and administrators. Plugge told the Iowa City Press Citizen that he wants to be closer to family. The 57-year-old Plugge has children and grandchildren who live in Lincoln, Nebraska. His mother and brothers live in Omaha.

More snow on the way, could slow holiday travel

This is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year but winter weather could ruin Christmas vacation plans for many Iowans.

Brad Small, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, says the first of two storm systems is on the way to Iowa now, which could dump one-to-three inches of snow on Iowa’s northern third tonight.

“Unfortunately, this won’t be anywhere near the biggest storm of the week,” Small says. “By Wednesday, Thursday and into Friday, a very potent and strong storm system will move out of the plains and bringing a wide swath of wintery precipitation to the entire state of Iowa.”

Iowa State almost ready to head to Arizona for bowl

Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads says the attention in practice has now turned to Minnesota. The Cyclones will meet the Gophers in the Insight Bowl on New Years Eve in Tempe, Arizona. Rhoads says they started focusing more on Minnesota to familiarize the team with what they do. He says when the get to Arizona on the 26th they will run to knock the rust off, and then will get into the normal game week preparation.

The Cyclones need to find a replacemebt for senior cornerback Kennard Banks was has been suspended for the game. Rhoads says they have three players who will get time rotating in at the position. The Cyclones have one more practice, today, before the players leave for Christmas.

Rhoads says the players will go home for the break and then about half the team will fly on the charter to Arizona, and the rest will meet them there.

Studying turns from books to film for Hawkeyes

The semester may be over but the Iowa defense will need to do its homework to get ready for the January fifth Orange Bowl. Defensive coordinator Norm Parker says the Hawks will need extra preparation to try and slow down Georgia Tech’s option attack.

Parker says in all the time they’ve been at Iowa, there has never been a team that will make the players study film and concentrate as hard every play as this team will. Parker says it takes more on the field preparation and off the field than any team they’ve played, or they won’t win.

Parker says the Hawkeyes have not faced an offense like this. He says the most option oriented team they’ve played was Illinois a couple of years ago. He says that’s the team most dedicated to the option that he can remember.

Hunter injured in Greene County

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a Carroll man suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting Saturday in Greene County. Officials say 51-year-old Dennis E. Johnston was driving east on 185th street in rural Greene County with a loaded, un-cased 20-gauge shotgun, when he went to move the gun which was laying across his lap.

The shotgun discharged, hitting Johnston in the left knee. The accident happened at around 4:30 P.M. Johnston was taken to the hospital in Jefferson before later being transferred to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. A report on his condition was not available.

New law sets limits on applying manure to frozen ground

A new state law kicks in today that will limit applying liquid manure on snow-covered farmland. It can now be applied only in emergencies. Gene Tinker is the coordinator of animal feeding operations for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Tinker says the law applies to facilities with 500 or more animals.

“Whenever manure is applied to snow-covered ground, when that snow melts, there is risk for some runoff,” Tinker says. “That’s basically why the Iowa legislature passed this law, was to require producers to take an extra look at the places where they do apply.” Tinker says all livestock and poultry producers need to protect water at all costs and prevent pollution as they apply manure.

He says, “They want to make sure they have good areas of fields with a low phosphorus index, where when snowmelt does occur, that manure is going to stay in place in the field to fertilize next year’s crop, as opposed to running off and getting into our streams.” The law limits liquid application from December 21st to April 1st if the ground is snow-covered. The DNR can enact penalties for non-compliance.
