Time to get ready for tax season

While the bitter cold weather may have you thinking ahead to spring — a spokesman for the I.R.S. say you should at least be thinking a little bit ahead to have your important financial information ready. Christopher Miller says the deadline to file your federal and state taxes is a few months away, but that shouldn’t stop you from planning ahead.

Miller says it’s a perfect time to start getting all those bills, receipts, and canceled checks together for you charitable deductions, your unreimbursed medical bills, or your mortgage information. He says get it all together in one place, whether you use a shoe box of a regular file. Miller says finding all the information now will make it easier to begin the process of filing your taxes once your information comes from your employer.

He says it will make “tax time a lot less taxing.” Things were changed a few years ago so receipts are now required for charitable deductions. Miller says you have to have a proper bank record for a charitable donation, like a receipt from the organization, a canceled check or some other similar formal notification of the donation.

Miller say you can miss out on important deductions if you don’t have the proper paperwork. For more information, visit the I.R.S. website at IRS.gov.

Snow clean up continues as more is on the way

Another winter storm bearing down on Iowa is raising concerns across parts of the state that are still trying to recover from the Christmas blizzard. Dena Gray-Fisher is a spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Transportation.

“We’re still trying to assist the counties in many areas dig out where they have very large drifts,” Gray-Fisher said. “So, this is really poor timing especially with the very dangerous wind chills and gusts of around 40 miles per hour expected with this storm.”

The D.O.T. sent state snow removal crews to six western Iowa counties last week to help local crews remove huge snow drifts from miles of roadways.

“Some of (the drifts) are 15 feet or higher,” Gray-Fisher said. “They go for a number of miles. On many of the county roadways, you really couldn’t distinguish where the road was.” An emergency proclamation from the Governor’s office cleared the way for state assistance in Monona, Audubon, Crawford, Harrison, Pottawattamie and Shelby counties. The approaching storm could cause more problems in those counties – including power outages.

Gray-Fisher says some power lines in that area of the state remain coated with 3 to 5 inches of ice. Individuals who plan to venture out over the next few days are encouraged to plan ahead in case they become stranded in their vehicle. Gray-Fisher says motorists should start the trip with at least a half tank of gas, pack a winter survival kit and carry a cell phone. Motorists who do become stranded are advised to remain with their vehicle.

Hawkeyes dominate Georgia Tech in Orange Bowl

The Iowa Hawkeyes used a quick start and as late clinching touchdown run from Brandon Wegher for a 24-14 win over Georgia Tech in the 76th Orange Bowl to claim its first B.C.S. bowl title.

Iowa’s defense was spectacular against Georgia Tech’s triple option attack. The Yellow Jackets averaged over 307 yards of rushing per game but were held to only 155 yards of total offense. Defensive end Adrian Clayborn was named the outstanding player after collecting nine tackles, including two sacks.

Clayborn says it feels “amazing” to get the victory and he credits defensive coach Norm Parker for putting together a great game plan.

The Hawkeyes finish 11-2 and claim their first win in a major bowl game since 1959. Clayborn says the BCS win means a lot over a great team and will give them a lot of momentum going into next season.

Ricky Stanzi finished 17 of 29 for 231 yards and his two first quarter touchdown passes gave the Hawks an early 14-0 lead. Stanzi says execution was the biggest thing and that is what held them back earlier in the year. Stanzi says it was a great win for the program, as he says it’s an honor to be playing at Iowa and to play for a great coach.

Brandon Wegher finished with 114 yards of rushing and a ground game that struggled for much of the regular season totaled 176 yards as Iowa outrushed Georgia Tech. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says they have a pretty decent running attack and the problem has been having them both healthy at one time. After losing in the 2003 Orange Bowl the Hawkeyes finished the season with a solid effort.

Ferentz says they wanted to finish up in a way that represented the type of team they had all season and he says the game did that and showed how mentally tough the team is. Ferentz says the defense set the tempo, and Ferentz says the credit goes to Parker and the defensive staff for the plan and the players for carrying it out.
