Culver doesn’t expect gay marriage to be big ’10 issue

Governor Chet Culver says he doesn’t expect gay marriage will be a significant issue in the 2010 election.

“I am focused on doing everything I can to move this state forward and I’m not worried about November,” Culver said this weekend during an appearance on Iowa Public Television. “I’m worried about January of 2010 and working as hard as I can as governor to get things done.”

Opponents of same-sex marriage chanted: “Let us vote” as Culver exited the Iowa House last Tuesday after his Condition of the State speech.  During an appearance on Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press” program, Culver said he “talked to and met” many of those protesters, who he described as “respectful.”

“This is the people’s house so we welcome groups to the capitol from every part of our state with divergent political views,” Culver said. “I think it’s healthy to have that kind — to provide that kind of opportunity to any group or any individual that wants to come to our capitol, to their house, as long as we are civil and respectful of the different views.”

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats has said this year’s election will be a “referendum” on gay marriage. But Culver dismisses the idea gay marriage will be a “front and center” issue in November.

“I think that Iowans are focused on jobs, economic recovery, flood recovery, doing what we can to support our kids, expanding health care for children, continuing to invest in things like early childhood education and being a leader in renewable energy,” Culver said on IPTV.  “I really think if most Iowans prioritize what is front and center and their number one concern you’ll hear, probably eight times out of ten, (is) jobs and economic recovery.”

Opponents of same sex marriage want a statewide vote on an amendment to the state constitution which would ban gay marriage in Iowa.  The legislature would have to pass a resolution placing that amendment before voters, but the governor has no role in enacting such resolutions.

Des Moines hospitals lift H1N1 restrictions

Six hospitals in Des Moines are lifting visitor restrictions that were put in place in October when the H1N1 flu virus reached its peak. Jeff Brock, with Iowa Health and Mercy Medical Center, says confirmed cases of H1N1 have plummeted. So, the hospitals are dropping rules that only allowed two adults at a time to visit patients.

“If seasonal flu would pick up to the same extremes that H1N1 did or if H1N1 influenza would come back into the area, we would probably give consideration to reinstituting the precautions again,” Brock said. Under the rules, children were not allowed to visit most patients. Brock says most people understood the rules were designed to minimize the risk of spreading the H1N1 flu.

“There were a few complaints,” Brock said. “We had to educate some of the visitors…it was just to protect their loved one while they’re in the hospital.” There’s no word from other hospitals around the state if they’ll also be lifting restrictions on visitors. Brock says visitors to any hospital should continue to take normal precautions. Those include staying home if they have a fever, coughs or a sore throat.

“If they’ve had any of those symptoms…they should give some consideration to not coming in to visit,” Brock said. All visitors to hospitals are being asked to wash their hands with soap and water or hand gel. Some visitors are required to wear a face mask.

ISU hoping to carry momentum from Nebraska win into Lubbock

Iowa State coach Greg McDermott says Saturday’s win at Nebraska has provided the Cyclones with a much needed boost of confidence. After opening the Big 12 race with a loss at home to top ranked Texas the Cyclones responded with a 56-53 win over the Huskers which snapped a 16 game conference road losing skid.

“My good friends at the Big 12 gave us three road games and Kansas and Texas at home to start the season, and that’s a tough stretch,” McDermott says. He says to get a win on the road gives them a lot of confidence as they travel to play Texas Tech.

McDermott says it was a big win because it was a low possession game. He says it was the first time this season they were able to win one of those games. McDermott says they had similar games against Northwestern and UNI, but weren’t able to make the plays at the end of the game to win.

Iowa State is 12-5 and will visit Texas Tech on Wednesday night.

The keynote speaker at today’s state Martin Luther King Junior celebration says much has been accomplished, but there are still many signs that more needs to be done to achieve equality in this country.

Renee Hardman, a vice president at Bankers Trust in Des Moines, traveled to Washington, D.C. last year to see Barrack Obama’s inauguration.

Hardman says as an African-American, she wondered if the election of Obama as president was a fulfillment of King’s dream.

Fog making driving tricky in Iowa

Motorists will need to be prepared for the possibility of some slick roads across parts of Iowa this week. Warmer air combined with the cold snow cover has produced areas of dense fog. National Weather Service Meteorologist Frank Boksa says that fog can present more dangers than just reduced visibility.

“It can deposit a very thin layer of moisture on some surfaces and if lesser traveled roads aren’t untreated, you can get a little glazing of ice on the road,” Boksa said. A potentially dangerous weather system is expected to move into the state late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Boksa says the system will include more warm air, setting up the chance for freezing rain. The forecast for Thursday includes a chance of freezing rain statewide, with light snow possible across northern Iowa. High temperatures throughout the week will range from the mid 20s to mid 30s, with overnight lows in the teens and 20s.

Gas prices go up in January

A dip in gas prices in December has been offset with an increase this month. The Iowa Office of Energy Independence says the state’s monthly survey showed the price of ethanol blended gasoline in Iowa was $2.64 a gallon which is 56% higher than the January 2009 price of $1.82 a gallon.

The average price for diesel in the most recent survey was $2.87 a gallon, which is 23% higher than the January 2009 price of $2.34. State analysts say there’s been an increase in demand in Iowa and the rest of the U.S. with the cold weather, and prices have also increased with positive signs of recovery in the economy.
