February is national heart month

The doors and windows of some Iowa homes are decorated with big red hearts for Valentine’s Day, but the entire month of February is considered National Heart Month. Jayme Sandberg, spokeswoman for the Iowa chapter of the American Heart Association, says heart disease and strokes kill more Iowans than anything else.

To be optimistic, Sandberg says the good thing about heart disease is that 80% of cases are preventable through regular exercise, a good diet and knowing your numbers, blood pressure and cholesterol. Heart disease and strokes are responsible for about one in every three deaths. Sandberg says most Iowans likely need to be better educated about taking care of their hearts.

“There’s always room for improvement,” she says. “Ninety-percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Think about that, 90%. I bet that 90% of the listeners out there don’t think that they have risk factors for heart disease.” Some of those risk factors include: smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese and physical inactivity.

Sandberg says this Friday, and the first Friday of every February, is the agency’s “Wear Red Day.” “This is a day where we ask everyone to look in their closets, see what they have red, and use that as an opportunity to start the conversation about heart disease,” she says, “because 80% of heart disease is preventable.”

Sandberg says there will be other special events during Heart Month to raise money and awareness. Learn about them at: “www.heart.org“.

Culver signs union-backed executive order

Govenror Culver is welcomed by a union member prior to his speech.

Governor Culver is welcomed by a union member prior to his speech.

Governor Culver has signed an executive order which calls for so-called “project-labor agreements” on large-scale state government projects, like construction of a new performance hall in Iowa City to replace the flooded-out Hancher Auditorium.

Culver spoke to the Iowa State Building and Construction Trades Council convention this morning about the decision and the governor received a standing ovation from the union workers in the room.

“The use of project-labor agreements may protect the public interest by providing structure and stability to construction projects, thereby promoting efficient, on-time completion of the highest standards and at the most reasonable cost,” Culver said.  “That’s what this order will do today.”

UNI looks to avenge only conference loss against Wichita State

The 24th ranked U.N.I. Panthers can take a big step toward the Missouri Valley Conference title when they host Wichita State on Wednesday night. At 10-1, the Panthers lead the Shockers by two games in the standings and will be out to avenge a loss in Wichita two weeks ago.

U.N.I. coach Ben Jacobsen says the Shockers are balanced and playing very well and have some depth inside. He says the Panthers are not focused on what the outcome of this game means for the league race. Jacobsen says the team has been able to take the positive and not so good in stride and continue to practice to get ready for each game.

Wichita State is 8-3 in the Valley race and coach Greg Marshall says the Shockers need this win. He says if they want to win the regular season title, this gives them a chance, but they will still need some help. Marshall says it will be almost impossible to catch U.N.I. if they don’t win this game.

Marshall says it will be a great challenge as the Panthers have not lost at home. U.N.I. is 19-2 overall. Wichita State is 19-4.
