A Pennsylvania man is facing drug charges after a deputy in western Iowa pulled his car over for speeding. It happened Saturday on Interstate 80 near Council Bluffs. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says Deputy Brian Miller was questioning the driver when he became suspicious of the contents of two suitcases in the back seat. Inside the cases, the deputy found 56 pounds of marijuana.

“It’s a lot of marijuana,” Danker said. “Deputy Miller has made some other seizures that have been over 100 pounds, so he’s been able to locate some of these before.” Zimmerman — who’s from Morrisville, Pennsylvania — was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

Sheriff Danker says he’s “amazed” how much marijuana, meth, cocaine and other drugs are being transported through the area. Danker says Deputy Miller has a particular “knack” for finding drugs during routine traffic stops.

“He’s got a (drug sniffing) dog assigned to him that will assist him. So, he’s equipped if he does suspect there’s a possibility somebody is transporting drugs,” Danker said. Zimmerman was released from custody on Monday.
