State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says April didn’t pull an surprises with the weather, it was consistently warmer than normal. He says temperatures averaged about seven degrees above normal and it will probably wind up in the top ten for warmest Aprils on record. Hillaker says only five of 30 days in April saw below normal temperatures.

Hillaker says it’s quite unusual for a month to be that consistent, and it followed what happened in most of March, so it has been a very warm spring in the state. It was a little wetter than normal overall. Hillaker says rainfall varied across the state, with above normal in southeast and southcentral Iowa, with areas that have been below normal. Northeast Iowa was below normal, which Hillaker says has been the case for quite some time. Hillaker says there was very little severe weather in April.
