Former president lauds the late Ed Campbell as “political genius”

Ed Campbell

Ed Campbell

A former president, a U.S. senator, a congressman and other Iowa politicians gathered in a Des Moines church today for the funeral of former Iowa Democratic Party chairman Ed Campbell.

Campbell, who died last week at the age of 75, served as an aide to Iowa Democrat luminaries of the past like Harold Hughes and John Culver. In 1977, Campbell became party chairman and helped solidify the status of Iowa’s first-in-the-nation Caucuses.

His younger sister, Christine Lantis, was the first to eulogize Campbell.  She said Campbell had convinced his much-younger sisters that he did background checks on all their boyfriends. ”Lisa always believed every seven-year-old always had tea parties with Governor Hughes,” Lantis said.

Five students with the Exira Community School District and their bus driver went on a wild ride this morning after the bus they were in was hit by a car southeast of Exira. Two Davenport men charged in drug death

Two men are charged in federal court in Davenport with death by methadone. Twenty-eight-year-old Colby Josvanger and 20-year-old Jonathen Anderson are in police custody. They are charged with distribution of methadone resulting in death.

That’s in connection with the overdose and death of a Pleasant Valley teen in February 2009. Police found 18-year-old Zachary Sullivan dead at a friend’s house in Pleasant Valley after getting a 9-1-1 call. They found a substance on him that tested positive as methadone.

Doctors later said Sullivan had methadone, cocaine, marijuana, anti-depressants and other drugs in his system. A witness told police that Sullivan had bought methadone from Josvanger and that Anderson had arranged those drug deals.

Financial advisor says Wall Street is making a solid recovery

A financial advisor in north-central Iowa says Wall Street is making some solid recoveries after last week’s big losses. Jim Tausz, of Clarion, says stocks surged earlier today, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up about 400 points, while the Nasdaq rose about 100 points.

“Having a big down like we had last week and then coming back like we are is obviously showing a lot of market strength,” Tausz says. “Very exciting, because when the market goes down, it brings in buying opportunities and as the market proceeds up, we’re going to see a lot of people making profits.”

The dollar is now at a 14-month high following last week’s violence in Greece, which he says helped push the markets into a spiral.

Mumps outbreaks in Iowa/Nebraska appear to be separate cases

Health officials in Iowa and Nebraska are investigating what appears to be two separate outbreaks of mumps. The outbreaks are cause for concern in both states as they were reported almost simultaneously and in relatively close proximity.

There are eight cases confirmed or suspected in northwest Iowa and 20 cases in eastern Nebraska. The Iowa cases are all in young adults associated with Dordt College in Sioux Center, about 40 miles north of Sioux City, while the Nebraska cases are all connected to a high school alumni event in Columbus, about 90 miles west of Omaha.

Mumps symptoms may include: fever, headache and swollen glands but it can cause deafness, sterility in men and in some cases death.

Man dies in Cedar Rapids apartment fire

See the update with the identity of the victim at the bottom of this story.

One person is dead after an apartment fire this morning in Cedar Rapids. Firefighters were called at 7 a.m. to a two-story building on the city’s northeast side (901 Oakland Road NE).

Upon arrival, they found smoke and flames coming from a second floor apartment. Cedar Rapids Fire Department spokesperson Greg Buelow says firefighters used an outdoor stairwell, forced open a door to the apartment and found a man lying on the ground just inside the doorway.

The man was taken to a hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The 35-year-old victim’s name has not been released. Buelow says the first floor of the building was unoccupied. He says the first floor was previously used as a bicycle shop and a grocery store.

The victim was the only person at home, but a pet dog also died in the fire. Investigators say it appears the fire started in the kitchen. The apartment did not have any working smoke detectors.

Update: The 35-year old man that died in an apartment fire this morning has been identified as Rodney Lee Noye.

Principal says fallen Marine will be missed

The body of the central Iowa Marine who was killed Friday in Afghanistan was flown back to the United States Sunday. Nineteen-year-old Lance Corporal Joshua Davis was a 2009 graduate of Perry High School. The principal of the high school, Dan Marburger, says it wasn’t long ago that Davis finished school.

“We’re all in a little bit of a shock here as we think about just a year ago that Josh was graduating from high school…(we’re) very proud of Josh and the service he had,” Marburger says. He says Davis was a four year member of the football and wrestling teams and was heavily involved in the industrial technology area. Marburger says there are many students who knew Davis.
