Des Moines called 4th most dangerous driving city

Insurance-dot-com is releasing its list of the Top Ten most dangerous cities in America for drivers — and one Iowa city made the list.

From fender-benders to totaled cars, some cities are known for demolition derby-style driving and that means auto owners are likely paying more for auto insurance.

While we expect large cities to be on the list, like Baltimore and Austin, there were some surprises. Des Moines ranks 4th most dangerous on the ratings, while our neighbors to the west, Lincoln, Nebraska, ranks 10th. On the flip side, some of the safest cities with low collision rates include, believe it or not, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Durant School District names new principal

After months of bitter accusations and community uproar, the Durant Schools has named a new high school principal. He’s 37-year-old Matt Kingsbury, the principal of Columbus High School in Columbus Junction since 2007. He’s getting an $82,000 salary and a 12-month contract in his new job. Superintendent Duane Bark says Kingsbury comes highly recommended.

He replaces Monica Rouse, who was suspended with pay by Bark last September for alleged wrongdoing, which she denied. The school board voted a month later to consider firing her. Rouse then requested and received a hearing before an administrative law judge, who said she should keep her job.

But the board rejected the opinion and voted in late March to fire her.

Iowans pleased at chance to see Dalai Lama

During his first visit to Iowa, the Dalai Lama urged thousands of people to spread the message about the importance of non-violence and education. His Holiness encouraged a curriculum that would teach students moral ethics and compassion toward others during a speech at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Rick Goodvin of Corning was one of the 5,400 people who packed the McLeod Center for Tuesday’s historic event.

“I enjoyed the simplicity and straight forward accessibility of it,” Goodvin says. “It was a very good message that’s a message that needs to be heard by more.” Goodvin made the trip from southwest Iowa, along with his mother and a friend. He said it was a rare chance to see the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

“It’s an important opportunity, something that hasn’t happened in this state or within an arm’s reach of the state for quite some time,” he says. Stephen Hart attended both of the Dalai Lama’s events – the afternoon keynote address and a morning panel discussion on “Education in a Non-Violent World.” Hart says he liked the Dalai Lama’s message.

“It was very informative and it was up-to-date with our current events,” Hart says. “He talked about our president going over to other countries and disarmament. His message has been, since he was born, peace. He was born in turmoil and had to leave his home but since then, he’s become an ambassador of peace.” Hart graduated from U.N.I. this month with a degree in general studies. He’s one of the “new generation” of people the Dalai Lama challenged to respect the views and beliefs of the others in order to bring less violence to world.

The speech wrapped up a day of events at U.N.I. for the Dalai Lama. The exiled Tibetan leader was also presented an honorary degree by U.N.I. President Benjamin Allen during his visit.

Iowans for Tax Relief president Ed Failor Jr. announces endorsement of Terry Branstad.

The group Iowans for Tax Relief today endorsed Terry Branstad in the June Republican primary for governor. I-T-R president, Ed Failor Junior, made the announcement at the Ankeny airport and says it’s a first for the group.

“We have not ever endorsed a candidate in a primary for governor, Democrat, Republican, we haven’t taken that step,” Failor said, “but the status quo isn’t serving us. We have to do something different. We’re an organization that’s never been about the status quo. We have recruited candidates against Republicans members of the Iowa Legislature who frankly were no friend of the taxpayer, and we took them out, because that was in the best interest of Iowa taxpayers. The status quo doesn’t work.”

Biden comments on infamous expletive caught on mic

During a speech in Cedar Rapids yesterday, Vice President Joe Biden made a reference to his now-infamous commentary on health care reform that was picked up a “live” microphone and heard ’round the world.

Biden wrapped the words “big deal” around a common expletive moments before President Obama signed the health care bill into law. Yesterday, as Biden was praising something Governor Chet Culver had done, Biden brought it up.

“Folks, that was a big deal — a big, big deal,” Biden said and the crowd in Cedar Rapids laughed. “Thank God my mother wasn’t here to hear me whispering to Barack.”

Biden has called his declaration a “faux pas” but Biden’s briefly blue bit has spawned a money-maker for Democrats.

“Now I don’t know why everybody thinks it’s so darned funny. I’m as embarrassed as hell by it, but apparently we’re selling t-shirts and making hundreds of thousands of bucks,” Biden said. “I don’t know man. I’m sorry.” The Democratic National Committee t-shirts with Biden’s new catch phrase are selling for $25 each.

Biden was the keynote speaker at a rally for Governor Culver’s reelection campaign. The rally was held in a Cedar Rapids park over the noon-hour.
