A Davenport family experiences its second tragic death in a week. On May 15th, former Davenport alderman and former Davenport School Board member Jim Hayek lost his sister. That’s when 44-year-old Julie Hayek of Davenport was struck and killed while crossing a street in East Moline, Illinois.
This weekend tragedy struck the Hayek family again. Jim and Eunice Hayek’s son, 33-year-old Erik Hayek of Bettendorf, was hurt and his fiance, 24-year-old Abby Vermeire of Bettendorf, was also hurt and later died as the result of a wreck early Saturday on I-80 about a mile east of the U.S. 61 interchange.
It was foggy and the car being driven by Erik Hayek went under the trailer of a semi making an illegal left turn at a cross-over. The truck driver, from New York, was uninjured but was ticketed for the illegal turn.
