The Iowa Family Policy Center and a pastor-led group called “Purpose Ministries” have collected petition signatures from over eight-hundred Iowa pastors, urging Iowa’s elected officials to let Iowans vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.

Iowa Family Policy Center president Chuck Hurley says the petitions will be presented to every statewide candidate in Iowa as well as all of the people who’re running for seats in the legislature.

“Whether they see the light, we believe and we hope that they will feel the heat,” Hurley says.  “And that they will recognize that ‘we, the people’ as 31 other states peoples have done deserve…a chance to vote on the Iowa Marriage Amendment.”

Bennie Sapp looking to play a bigger role for Vikings

Former U.N.I. defensive back Benny Sapp is hoping to play a bigger role for the Minnesota Vikings next season. Sapp is going through off-season workouts. He signed a new contract a few months ago and spent much of last season as a nickel back for the Vikings. Sapp says he’s just working on things he didn’t do last year and would like to do this year.

Some key members of the Vikings secondary are missing right now due to injury. Sapp says they have to prepare like they are going into the season without them, but they will be back.

Sapp says it has been good to get back on the practice field. He says he thought it would be hard, but he says after the first two days, his legs came back to him.

The Vikings made it to the NFC championship game this past season.

Youth soccer deadlines approaching for Iowa Games

The first of two deadlines to enter the youth soccer competition at the Iowa Games is Tuesday. Executive Director Jim Hallihan says June 1st is the postal deadline. He says more than 200 teams are expected to travel to Ames for the competition that will be held the weekend of July 17th.

Hallihan says when they started having regionals, a lot of teams didn’t get to make it to Ames to play, and he says that was discouraging for the. So they’ve restructured to allow all the teams to get to Ames, and the adult soccer and softball have been moved away from the weekend.

Hallihan says teams may register via the mail or on-line at IowaGames.org. The on-line registration deadfline is next Monday.

Hallihan says it may take a few weeks for the schedule to come out, and everything will be done on-line.

Severe weather a possibility tonight

Forecasters say parts of Iowa will likely see severe weather later today. Meteorologist Frank Boksa, at the National Weather Service, says a strong storm system is moving toward Iowa from the west, while a cold front is heading down from the north.

Boksa says the fronts will collide late this afternoon and tonight, forming thunderstorms with plenty of moisture and the potential for heavy rainfall. He says there’s also the possibility of tornadoes, though there have been no twisters confirmed in Iowa yet this year.
