A 12-year-old Muscatine girl is safe in Jacksonsville, Florida, waiting for relatives to return her to Iowa. Rosario Orr was reported missing Friday after failing to come home from her middle school. Police found her Sunday in Jacksonville.

She was with 35-year-old Justin Carter of Jacksonville, who was arrested on unrelated drug charges. Police say she is in good condition and was not injured or harmed. Rosario was recovered following an investigation by the FBI office in Omaha. Authorities believe Rosario met Carter on the Internet.

They tracked her by using her cell phone records. The FBI is reviewing federal charges in the case.

Last-minute get-out-the-vote push

Terry Branstad campaigning.

The three Republican candidates running for governor are trying to make last-minute connections with supporters in these final hours before Primary voting starts on Tuesday.

Terry Branstad is holding rallies for supporters in Marion, Davenport and Urbandale today and his campaign is making “thousands” of calls to supporters.  Ron Wilson of Marshalltown is among that group.  Wilson voted for Branstad in 1994 and plans to do so again in 2010.

“There’s history that he’s talking about and we lived through that,” he says, “and so we can appreciate that.”

Dorothy Wilson, his wife, says she likes Branstad’s “open attitude” and approach to solving the state’s budget problems. ”We need a little bit of that honesty,” she says.

Bob Vander Plaats

Bob Vander Plaats held a series of get-out-the-vote rallies this past weekend. Sandy and Melvin Heckart of Norwalk attended one of those rallies, the one in West Des Moines. ”I like what he has to say and it seems like he handles himself on stage, on T.V.,” Melvin Heckart says. “We like him.”

Sandy Heckart says Vander Plaats is grounded in the constitution.  “I like the fact that he’s going to repeal ObamaCare, the fact that he’s going to address the illegal immigrants in our country,” she says.  “There’s just a number of issues that we need to get back on track. We’re getting totally off base and I think he’s the man to do it.”

Rod Roberts made half a dozen campaign “whistle-stops” over the weekend and he plans to hold rally in his home town of Carroll tonight. Merle Virgil of Oskaloosa is a Roberts supporter who dropped by a Roberts event in Atlantic on Saturday.

“I think he’s got a shot.  I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people,” Virgil said.  “And I think he’ll be very good for the state.” Virgil’s daughter was a college classmate of Roberts at Iowa Christian College.

Grinnell College dedicated its new $90-million athletic and recreation center over the weekend. Phase two of the project includes a natatorium with a 50 meter pool as well as a fieldhouse with a six lane 200 meter track.

Grinnell athletic director Greg Wallace says for the most part construction has remained on schedule.

Wallace says it has gotten behind and then moved ahead depending on the weather, and now things are on schedule to be ready in August.

The project also includes new tennis courts, racquetball courts, training and equipment rooms.

He says the coaches, athletes and student body are looking forward to moving into the new facility.

Motorcyclist killed, Des Moines girl critically injured in central Iowa accidents

A Des Moines girl is in critical condition after being hit by a car and dragged Sunday in a city park. Witnesses tell Des Moines police 14-year-old Melissa Robinson was standing in the grass at Union Park when the speeding car ran through a stop sign and hit her.

Robinson was dragged 75 feet until the car hit a tree. The car’s driver was still seat-belted in when paramedics arrived. He’s identified as 45-year-old Joel Simpson of Des Moines. Simpson was injured and claims he can’t remember the accident. He was wanted for driving while barred and has at least four drunk driving convictions, though police say they do not believe alcohol was a factor in this incident.
