A Waterloo liquor store clerk who shot and killed two men during a robbery attempt early this morning will not be charged with a crime. Police say it appears Johnny Sanders was justified in shooting the two men, identified as 21-year-old Robert Bolden and 21-year-old Antonio Sproles, both of Waterloo.

Officers responding to a robbery alarm at East 4th Liquor Store overnight discovered two people had been shot at the scene. Police say Bolden and Sproles were both wearing bandanas over their faces when they entered the business around 2 A.M. today. One man was carrying a .22-caliber rifle; the other was armed with a .22-caliber handgun. Both weapons were recovered at the scene. Police say Sanders was in an office area when he saw the two men walk in.

According to investigators, Sanders grabbed a revolver that was in the room, confronted the men and shot them. Police say Bolden died at the scene. Sproles died a short time later at a nearby hospital. Sanders wasn’t injured. Investigators continue to collect evidence in the case. Police say, at this time, they aren’t planning to file any charges against Sanders.
