Officials at Grinnell College are waiting to find out if the school has been selected to host the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in 2012.

Will Freeman, the men’s track and cross country coach at Grinnell, says a bid was put in about a year ago and a “championships committee” is deciding this week on a location for the 2012 competition. Grinnell College has a new indoor facility on campus and coach Freeman says that’s one of the main reasons they submitted a bid.

“There’s only so many schools across the country that have a facility that can host a major competition…and now Grinnell’s one of them,” he says.  “…Having this thing completed is a big, big plus for us.”

Grinnell has hosted NCAA Championships in the past.  The NCAA Cross County Championships were held at Grinnell on two occasions in the 1990s.  “What it showed them is…that we have the infrastructure here to do it,” Freeman says.  “Between Grinnell and Newton, we have the hotel rooms to host the competition.”

North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, is the other finalist for the 2012 competition.
