A 31-year-old northwest Iowa native has died from injuries he suffered during a helicopter crash in Afghanistan.

Captain David Wisniewski was flying the helicopter when it was shot down on June 9th.  Four other airmen were killed and two soldiers were wounded in the crash. Wisniewski died Friday at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland.

Wisniewski was an Air Force pilot, on his fifth tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was a graduate of Woodbury Central High School in Moville and the Air Force Academy. He was engaged to be married in September.

He was awarded the Purple Heart last month, after he was airlifted from Germany to treatment in Maryland for his head wound.

His father, Chet, is activities director at Iowa City Regina High School.
