Vision Iowa grants for projects in Hubbard and Cherokee

vision iowa logoThe Vision Iowa Board today awarded Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to projects in Hardin and Cherokee Counties.

Vision Iowa Board spokesperson Jessica O’Riley says a $325,000 grant will help finance a new library in downtown Hubbard. “The great story out of this one is, for a town of just under 900 people, they raised more than $800,000 in private financing,” O’Riley said. The new 7,000 square foot library carries a total price tag of just over $1.44 million.

The other CAT grant awarded today will help the Cherokee County Fair Association construct a new 4-H Expo Center. O’Riley says the 16,000 square foot facility will be used primarily as a livestock show arena. The total project cost is around $275,000. The CAT grant for Cherokee is worth $52,000.

Today’s meeting of the Vision Iowa Board took place in Fairfield.

Dyersville man trying to buy Field of Dreams site

A Dyersville man hopes to buy the Field of Dreams movie site — with the help of several hundred fans. Joe Scherrman is no stranger to the famous field. For many years, he traveled with the Ghostplayers to film their trips and events around the world, footage from which can now be seen in a recently-released award-winning documentary called “Ghostplayers: Relive the Magic.”

Scherrman is organizing an effort to buy the movie site, which was put up for sale this spring. The asking price of $5.4 million is too much for one person, he says, but Scherrman believes splitting the cost between many people could be a great solution. About 4,000 people subscribe to the Ghostplayers newsletter and he notes if just 3,000 of them put in $2,000 each, that would total six-million dollars.

He’s put out word to the group and says he’s getting many positive responses from people interested in investing or contributing to the purchase of the site. Potential offers add up to $160,000, from people all over Iowa and the Midwest, California, New York, Canada, and even Japan and China. Scherrman says there are discussions underway about improvements that could be made to the Field of Dreams.

Ideas include removing the souvenir stands and making it a single lane back to the baseball diamond and the farmstead — just like it appeared in the film. On the other side of a hill, they could build an entire complex, including several diamonds, but have it out of view. Scherrman says they now have a group of people investigating the proper way to create a fund to buy and maintain the tourism site.

They’ve been talking with organizers of a Green Bay Packers facility in Wisconsin. It’s a totally fan-based, non-profit group so the investors wouldn’t get any return, versus dealing with investors in a for-profit group where money could be made. If you’re interested in owning a piece of the Field of Dreams, contact Scherrman by email at “joe@ghostplayer.us”.

Transportation commission approves grants for Sioux City, Lyon County

The Iowa Transportation Commission approved state funding of nearly $.4.8 million dollars for Sioux City Tuesday to make roadway improvements to help lure in new businesses. Craig Markley with the Department of Transportation says it’s a RISE or “Revitalize Iowa’s Sound Economy” grant.

Markley says Sioux City submitted a request for an “immediate opportunity” grant to support large-scale industrial manufacturing focusing on wind energy, but based on the capital investment, job creation and area to be opened up, the state reclassified it to a local development grant which reduces the local match to 50%.

So the total project is for over $9-million. Markley says the street improvements would help provide access to more than 400 acres for industrial development in the city’s Southbridge Business Park.

Markley says one business, T-P-I composites, has expressed interest and Sioux City is one of two finalists. T-P-I makes blades for wind turbines.

The transportation commission also approved a grant of $369,000 Tuesday to make road improvements for the new casino under construction in northwest Iowa.

Markley says the project will construct turning lanes on Iowa Highway 9 in Lyon County. Investors are spending $118-million to build the casino.

Ed Thomas family, UNI basketball part of ESPN awards

The Thomas family of Parkersburg will receive the 2010 Arthur Ashe Courage award during tonight’s ESPY awards show on ESPN. Longtime Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas was shot and killed by one of his former players a little over a year ago. Parkersburg resident Sandy Cox says Thomas’s widow and her two sons comforted those who were grieving instead of the other way around.

Cox says the family wrapped their arms around the community and led them through the hardest part of their life. She says they showed courage and how to forgive and they are still doing it today.

Mark Becker was convicted of first degree murder in March and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The University of Northern Iowa basketball team is one of four nominees for the “Best Upset” award at tonight’s ESPY awards on ESPN. The Panthers stunned top ranked Kansas 69-67 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City. U.N.I. AD Troy Dannen says head coach Ben Jacobsen, guard Ali Farokmanesh and center Jordan Egleseder have been invited to attend the event in Los Angeles.

Dannen says it is a great opportunity for the school, and another chance for them to have some national attention.

The winner is determined by an on-line poll.
