Forecasters say warmer weather is moving in and Iowa could see its hottest temperatures of the year so far today. National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Moyer says a heat advisory is in effect for most of the state, all but several northwest Iowa counties.

He says a cold front that’s moving toward Iowa from the northwest is pulling a lot of hot, humid air into the state from the south. Moyer says it’ll be a hot and muggy day to do anything outside.

The high humidity and high temps in the low to mid 90s will be pushing the heat index to between 103 and 108 degrees. Moyer says most folks know that when the cold weather reaches all of the hot air over Iowa later today, it’ll mean thunderstorms. He says some of the storms could be severe later this afternoon.

Hail, high winds, heavy rain and isolated tornadoes are a possibility as this front makes its way across the state. Sunshine is expected to return for tomorrow along with slightly cooler weather.
