University of Iowa officials are tweaking some of the new rules and regulations put in place this year for home football games. Only one of the changes will be noticed Saturday when the Hawkeyes host the Iowa State Cyclones. U-I spokesperson Tom Moore says additional security officers will be added at the entry gates to Kinnick Stadium to check bags and purses.

“Those who choose to carry purses or bags will still be required to show the items for a thorough inspection at the gate,” Moore said. “That’s a critical security measure that’s been implemented at sporting venues nationwide, but we hope the increase in personnel doing the inspections should mean (fans) will experience fewer delays entering the stadium.”

In addition, an “express lane” on the left side of every gate will accommodate fans who are not carrying purses, bags or other containers. Tailgating in U-I owned ramps and lots after some games will be allowed to last longer than the previous mandate of two hours.

Now, fans attending games that kick off in the morning will be permitted to drink for two hours after the game before being asked to leave the lots and ramps three hours after the game ends. In a press release, U-I Athletic Director Gary Barta (BAR-tuh) said the university “made some mistakes” last Saturday.

“President (Sally) Mason told me she received approximately 50 e-mails,” Moore said. “The majority of them were expressing displeasure at the fact the tailgating limitation occurred so soon following the game.” The extended post-game tailgating will not apply to tomorrow’s game, which kicks-off at 2:30 p.m.

“We will still follow the general guidelines that one hour past the emptying of Kinnick Stadium people should cease consuming alcohol in university owned parking lots and ramps. And then, at two hours, they should be packed up and starting to depart,” Moore said. The new limits on tailgating were introduced prior to last week’s season opener as officials look to target people who take gameday drinking too far.

Police have also pledged to crack down on open container violations on streets and sidewalks and conduct postgame vehicle checkpoints.
