A western Iowa woman died when her motorized scooter was struck by a train in Monona County. The victim was identified as 92-year old Ruth Hale Swan, of Whiting.

Witnesses to the accident in Whiting said Swan had left a local gas station on her electric scooter and was crossing a set of railroad tracks on a sidewalk running parallel to Whittier Street, when the scooter tipped over at about the same time a train was approaching.

The witnesses tried to run to the woman’s aid, but were unable to reach her in-time. The accident happened at around 4:10 p.m., Friday.
