Boswell, Zaun clash in TV debate

There was a testy, hour-long debate between Democratic Congressman Leonard Boswell of Des Moines and Republican challenger Brad Zaun of Urbandale tonight.

Boswell repeatedly accused Zaun of being a “fear-mongerer” and Zaun accused Boswell of running a “slanderous, hit campaign” against him.  The two had this exchange about halfway through the debate.

“Well, congressman, you know, I think it’s unfortunate that you’ve done that and I’m going to continue to talk about solutions. This is a great country,” Zaun said.

Iowa State has new outlook after upset of Texas

Saturday’s upset win at Texas has changed the outlook for the Iowa State Cyclones as they enter the home stretch of the regular season. At 4-4 overall, the Cyclones are edging closer to bowl eligibility and they finish with three of their last four at home.

Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says to be at 4-4 and show the resiliency they have shown and to get the win at Texas makes them very pleased. Rhoads says the victory over Texas ranks up there with last year’s win at Nebraska. He says when you haven’t won at a place for 32 years (Nebraska) and haven’t ever won at the other (Texas) both are “pretty significant.”

Rhoads says the win over Nebraska put them at 5-3 and was after a win, while the win at Texas came after two big losses, and he says you can count out the significance of winning at programs with such tradition, and the boost it gives them.

Cyclone defensive end Jacob Lattimer has been named the Big 12 defensive player of the week. Lattimer had two sacks and two tackles for a loss in his first start. Rhoads says Lattimer has been coming on and that’s why the moved him into the starting role. He says Lattimer was “relentless” Saturday and the whole front four played a good game.

Iowa State hosts 2-5 Kansas this weekend and Rhoads says the goal this week to to avoid a letdown. Rhoads says “there’s a lot that takes place between your ears and state of mind and attitude will play a big role in how we perform this Saturday.” Rhoads says they have to talk about that all week so they prepare very well and peak Saturday at game time.

The Cyclones are two wins away from being eligible for a bowl game and Rhoads does not mind if the players talk about it. Rhoads says they like to have expectations for the program and he says last year it was probably overstate last year as it seemed so lofty when he took over. But he says college football is all about winning bowl games and he doesn’t have a problem with them talking about it.

Rhoads says the Cyclones are looking forward to playing three home games as he says it’s always preferred to play at home than on the road.

Report shows tourism spending in state dropped 5.5% last year

A new report shows travelers spent less money in Iowa last year compared to 2008. Iowa Department of Economic Development spokesperson Jessica O’Riley says visitor expenditures dropped 5.5%. “In 2008, we generated 6.4 billion dollars and in 2009, 6.1 billion,” O’Riley said. “I think we’re finally seeing the effects of the recession.”

Domestic travel declined despite lower gas prices in 2009 and record flooding in 2008 which disrupted vacation plans. O’Riley say it appears people still took vacations in 2009, but chose cheaper options – such as staying with friends or relatives instead of at a hotel.

“We also know that state park attendance was up, so that’s also a less expensive option for a vacation,” O’Riley said.

The 5.5% decline in travel spending mirrored a national trend. “The national average for domestic travel was down 7.9%. We’re not down as much as the national average, so that’s a good sign,” O’Riley said. The annual study was conducted by the U.S. Travel Association.

It shows Polk County, which includes the city of Des Moines, generated close to 1.4 billion dollars in domestic travel expenditures to lead all Iowa counties. The report claims domestic traveler expenditures supported 63,100 jobs within Iowa in 2009, representing 4.3 percent of the state’s non-agricultural employment.See the full report here: www.traveliowa.com/downloads/countyimpact09.pdf

Iowa wins money for Iowa City to Chicago rail service

The Iowa and Illinois departments of transportation have won a $230-million award from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) for passenger rail service from Chicago to Iowa City via the Quad Cities.

The director of the Iowa D.O.T.’s Office of Rail Transportation, Tammy Nicholson, says the money will pay for the infrastructure to get the route going.

Nicholson says the federal funding is for 80% of the cost with a 20% state match, and will purchase equipment for two round trips a day between Chicago and Iowa City. She says it will also provide funding to complete the environmental studies, and the engineering studies, as well as construction of projects. The construction includes the stations along the line that need to be built in Geneseo and Moline, Illinois and Iowa City.

Nicholson says the plan is to have the service running by 2015. She says the projected ridership in 2015 is 246,800 people. Nicholson says the state money has already been appropriated for the route. Nicholson says the legislature appropriated $3-million dollars in 2010, $2-million for 2011, and made a commitment for $6.5 million in 2012 and then up to $20-million over four years to meet the 20% match.

Trains will run along the 219-mile route at speeds up to a maximum of 79-miles an hour.

Forecast calls for cold weather to move in

Iowans who’ve avoided switching on their furnaces likely will have to break down soon. The forecast calls for cold weather to roll into the state, along with rain and thunderstorms. Meteorologist Rod Donovan, at the National Weather Service office in Johnston, says strong winds will be coming with the rain and a High Wind Watch is posted for Tuesday.

“We’re expecting really strong winds to develop,” Donovan says. “You could see a few gusts around 60 miles an hour in the morning, then it’ll be pretty persistent 40-to-50 mile an hour winds throughout the remainder of the day. We’ll have strong winds again on Wednesday with another round of 40, 50-mile an hour gusts expected on that day.” Donovan says some of the coldest temperatures of the fall season so far will arrive by mid-week.

The storm front will bring some very cold Canadian air with it. He expects moderate temperatures tonight with falling temperatures on Tuesday, while a second cold front is expected on Wednesday night with a hard freeze. Lows may be in the 20s while high temperatures across Iowa on Thursday may only reach the low to mid-40s.

Three whistleblowers fly into Iowa to tout Grassley’s work

Three “whistleblowers” who were awarded millions after suing their employers for cheating the federal government flew to Iowa today to endorse Senator Chuck Grassley’s bid for reelection.

Sal Barbera a Florida hospital for a “kick-back” scheme that resulted in the hospital repaying $23.5 million – and Barbera was paid a percentage of that. “Now none of this would have been possible for me and this money would not have been recovered if it wasn’t for The False Claims Act and Senator Grassley who has been relentless and very, very persistent in protecting the rights of whistleblowers,” Barbera said.

Jim Alderson was fired when he refused to file his hospital’s inflated claims to Medicare. Without mentioning her by name, Alderson criticized Grassley’s Democratic opponent, Roxanne Conlin, for saying Grassley is too quick to side with “big business” and Wall Street. “That’s one falsehood that, hopefully, my trip out here from Montana will clear up,” Alderson said.

Tina Gonter of Florida choked up as she spoke about wearing a wire to record conversations and catch her employer’s scheme to make faulty valves for the Navy’s nuclear submarines. ”These days it seems like everything is about politics.  This isn’t,” Gonter said of her trip to Iowa and her appearance at Grassley’s news conference. “Senator Grassley’s law is important to the country, and so is he.”

President Lincoln signed The Fair Claims Act during the Civil War and Grassley helped update the law in 1986. Under the legislation, whistleblowers are entitled to up to 30 percent of the damages a judge orders a private company to pay for bilking the government. ”I don’t think we can get enough information out about The False Claims Act being a useful tool, originally the number one tool against defense fraud,” Grassley said. “And now it appears to be the number one tool against health care fraud.”

One of Grassley’s campaign commercials touts his work for whistleblowers, but Grassley hasn’t heard the ad. ”When you have 10 of ‘em and if it was running a month ago, I’m apt to forget. The only one I remember is everybody says, ‘Your wife does such a nice job.’ I’m just glad I’m not running against her, see?” Grassley said, laughing. “That’s the only commercial I ever hear about.”

None of the three whistleblowers who spoke at Grassley’s news conference are featured in the campaign commercial.

Paulee Lipsman, a spokesperson for Conlin’s campaign, issued a written statement this afternoon, mentioning tomorrow night’s Grassley-Conlin debate on WHO Radio rather than directly responding to the whistleblowers.

“As has been true throughout this campaign, Senator Grassley has surrounded himself with supporters and those who will not challenge his views,” Lipsman said. “With just one week to go, Roxanne Conlin will finally get the opportunity to debate him on job creation, social security, tax breaks for the wealthiest, and the influence of special interests in Washington.  She looks forward to this chance to debate the issues most important to Iowans.”
