Early harvest changes conditions for opening of pheasant season
Some 74,000 hunters are counting down the hours for this weekend’s start of pheasant season in Iowa.
Todd Bogenschutz, a D.N.R. wildlife biologist, expects a big turnout for the Saturday opening, thanks to the exceptional fall harvest the past several weeks which has whittled down much of the birds’ habitat.
“This year’s going to be a lot different than last year,” he says. “Last year at this time, only 6% of the corn crop was out and this year on the opener, we’re probably going to be looking at maybe 80-percent of the corn out, so big difference.”
“Sing the Booze Tour” comes to Iowa
A TV personality who travels the world visiting bars and pubs is bringing his “Sing the Booze Tour” to Iowa. Zane Lamprey’s job basically involves learning local drinking customs and sampling all kinds of beer, wine and liquor. And he’s not complaining.
“I get paid to do what most people consider a leisure time activity…going to a different country or state and trying different beers, alcohols and cocktails, meeting people and just hanging out and having a good time. I mean, that’s my job,” Lamprey told Radio Iowa.
The host of “Drinking Made Easy” (HD-Net) and “Three Sheets” (Travel Channel) is now on a 27-city U.S. tour with a backing band and his buddy Steve McKenna. Lamprey describes the show as a mix of music, comedy and — surprise — a drinking game.
“It all surrounds having a good time and it’s more of an engaged experience for the audience,” Lamprey said. “It involves telling stories of some of our travels, mixed in with some songs, mixed in with the show being a drinking game. It’s really like a performance as opposed to a stand-up comedy show.” Lamprey’s tour stops in Council Bluffs tonight at the Horseshoe Casino and Thursday night at People’s Court in Des Moines.

Des Moines police look for cause of fatal motorcyle accident
The driver of a motorcycle involved in an accident Tuesday in Des Moines has died and police are looking for help in piecing together the cause accident. Police department spokesman, Jeff Edwards says 55-year-old Raymond Wilkins of Des Moines suffered serious head injuries in the accident. Sergeant Edwards says Wilkins was alone on the cycle and they don’t know what caused the crash.
Edwards says the street is being worked on and there is a large metal plate across the street, but he says it appears Wilkins went down before he got to the plate and that is not believed to be a factor in the accident. He says they are looking for witnesses who might be able to help in the investigation. Edwards says Wilkens was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Edwards says Wilkins had a helmet, but it was strapped onto the back seat rest. “Had he been wearing the helmet, can’t say that it would have resulted differently, but certainly wouldn’t have hurt,” Edwards said. Edwards says they hope traffic investigators will get enough information to determine how the accident happened.
Culver says Republican visits will have “zero” impact on campaign
Democratic Governor Chet Culver says he welcomes the crew of Republican governors who’re flying into Iowa today to rally with Terry Branstad, the Republican candidate for governor. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney rallied with Branstad yesterday in three cities, but Culver says this series of events should have “zero” impact on Culver’s race with Branstad.
“He starts his tour with a presidential candidate who is Mr. Wall Street himself, Mitt Romney. He made tens of millions of dollars on Wall Street,” Culver says. “He couldn’t be helping me more by reinforcing the choice.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal plan to rally with Branstad at 11 o’clock in Newton. While Jindal has said he’s not interested in running for the White House, Pawlenty and Barbour are potential Republican presidential candidates in 2012.
“I mean this is about Iowa. This isn’t about, with all due respect, Mitt Romney and 2012,” Culver says. “You know, this is about Main Street Iowa today and I love the contrast.” Culver made his comments to a small group of reporters early this morning in Des Moines.
