Applications are now being accepted for the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. Sue Eldred of the Red Rock Area Community Action Program in Jasper County expects more people to sign up this year.

Eldred says the economy will likely lead to more people who need help with paying for their heat this winter. She says they had 1,177 households alone in Jasper County last year that signed up for the assistance. Eldred says the eligibility is based on federal income guidelines, which are 1505 of the poverty level.

Eldred says a family of three cannot have over $6,866 dollars in income to be eligible. Applications are being taken through April 30th. Contact you local community service agency to find out more.
