Jamie VanderBeken hit a long three point as time expired as the Iowa State Cyclones edged Creighton 91-88 in Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

I.S.U. coach Fred Hoiberg says they got a good in bounds pass and thankfully the shot went in. VanderBeken’s game winner came right after Creighton’s Antwan Young tied the game with a pair of free throws with one-point-six-seconds remaining. Hoiberg says it was entertaining with a high number of three pointers, and he says he would have liked to have put the game away at the end.

Iowa State made only 10-of-18 free throws and had to rally from a 12-point deficit early in the second half. Hoiberg says it felt like a tournament game with both bands and cheerleaders and fans from both sides. He says it was his first coaching experience in a close game, and it is something they can learn from and build on.

Diante Garrett had a career high 28 points to lead the Cyclones who improve to 4-0 on the season. Creighton drops to 3-1.
