A fugitive who escaped late Tuesday from University of Iowa Hospitals is now in custody in Scott County after about 18 hours of freedom.

It all started with deputies taking accused bank robber 20-year-old Anthony Koehlhoeffer to the hospital on Tuesday for treatment under a court order.

He escaped, then allegedly committed several car jackings in Iowa City, eventually forcing a woman to drive him to Bettendorf, where he fled on foot. Koehlhoeffer then allegedly took a car from a motorist in a north Davenport parking lot. But he was spotted driving into Bettendorf soon after by a Davenport cop in an unmarked squad car.

Bettendorf and Davenport officers pursued Koehlhoeffer until he crashed in a church parking lot about 6 Wednesday night, sustaining minor injuries. Koehlhoeffer now faces various charges, including kidnapping, in Iowa City and additional charges in both Davenport and Bettendorf.
