A northwest Iowa woman was arrested Wednesday for failing to provide proper care to several horses. Fifty-two-year-old Shirley Schmitt of rural Early is charged with animal neglect.

She was jailed Wednesday after Sac County Sheriff’s deputies say they discovered six horses on her farm that were malnourished and without a working water supply. The horses were taken to a nearby veterinary clinic for treatment. One other horse was found dead on the property.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa will be offering up the six horses for adoption.
