Separate accidents Thursday in the eastern Iowa town of Williamsburg claimed the lives of two men. The first incident was reported around 12:45 p.m. when a man was crushed by a tree he was cutting down.

The Iowa County Sheriff’s office identifies the victim as 33-year-old Frank Meager of Cottage Grove, Minnesota. He was working as a subcontractor, clearing the way for a pipeline company. The other accident happened an hour later.

Authorties say a group of hunters were using a pickup to free another pickup stuck in a snowy farm field. The tow strap failed and a portion of the strap struck and killed one of the men. He’s been identified as 63-year-old Gerome Miller of Marengo.
