Authorities in northwest Iowa say a four-year-old girl walked through a snowy farm field to get help after the pickup she was in with her mother and brother rolled off a highway. The accident happened Sunday night on Highway 10 near Alton.

Sioux County Sheriff’s officials say 25-year-old Jamie Carrion of Granville was driving a pickup that slid off the road and rolled a couple times, coming to rest on it’s side. Carrion was trapped inside the cab with her one-year-old son, Abel. She could not find her four-year-old daughter, Averie, and was worried she’d been thrown from the vehicle or trapped underneath it.

Carrion called 911 with her cell phone. Rescuers say Averie was found safe at a farmhouse about a quarter-mile away. She had walked through a field to get help. The girl was reunited with her mother and baby brother at a nearby hospital, where they were all treated for minor injuries.

Jamie Carrion was cited for failure to properly secure a child and failure to maintain control. She told authorities Averie is normally in a booster seat. However, since she borrowed the truck from her parents, Averie was just wearing a seatbelt. Her brother was in a car seat.
