Davenport police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in the Mississippi River. Someone walking along the river in east Davenport saw the body near the shore at midday Thursday and called police.

Police Captain David Struckman says evidence at the scene is leading police to consider the death suspicious and not just a drowning. Struckman says the body appeared to have been in the river for at least a couple of days. He says an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Davenport police have contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in hopes of determining whether the body is that of a snowmobiler who fell through the ice in the Maquoketa River near Sabula in January. But Struckman says that’s not likely — the clothing does not appear to match that of the missing snowmobiler.
