A state legislator from Council Bluffs suffered a heart attack this weekend.

Fifty-six-year-old Representative Mark Brandenburg, a Republican, was at the public library in Council Bluffs Saturday morning — one of four area lawmakers who were attending a legislative forum in a library meeting room. Brandenburg didn’t feel well, stepped outside and according to a legislative staffer, doctors determined he had a heart attack.

Surgeons at Creighton Hospital inserted a stent to open one of his arteries according to an aide to House Republicans.

Last November, Brandenburg defeated a Democratic legislator to win a seat in the Iowa House. Brandenburg has taught at Iowa Western Community College for the past decade after a 34-year career with the Omaha Public Power District.
