A privately-owned island along the Cedar River will soon been owned by the city of Waterloo. The Waterloo City Council has approved the purchase of 26 acres of wooded land on San Souci Island.

The 2008 floods damaged 20 homes on the island, which have already been purchased by the city. Those homes are in the process of being torn down. The city is now considering buying up the remaining land from the island association. Waterloo City Planner Aric Schroeder says the city is looking at future uses for the island.

An agreement for buying the remainder of the property from the island’s association will voted on within the next two weeks.
