Iowa’s now ranked among the nation’s top ten most peaceful states. An international group called the Institute for Economics and Peace issues what it calls the Global Peace Index every year.

This time around, Iowa is listed as the ninth most peaceful state. The group uses criteria like violent crime statistics, percentage of a state’s population in prison, the size of the police force and the availablity of firearms.

While Iowa placed 9th, Maine is considered America’s most peaceful state, followed by New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota and North Dakota. The five least peaceful? Alabama, Florida, Nevada, Tennessee and in last place, Louisiana.
