The deadline for filing federal tax returns is just hours away now and some Iowans will be hard pressed to make it under the wire. I.R.S. spokesman Christopher Miller says filing your return electronically is the best way to avoid costly mistakes.

“Math errors are always an issue, especially when you’re running short on time,” Miller says. “That’s another reason the IRS encourages people to e-file because the tax software will check the math as well as answering and asking all of those important questions to make sure you get all the credits and deductions you have coming to you.”

If finishing on time is not an option, Miller says Iowans can file for an extension by filling out form 4868 on-line. Miller says, “That gives you an automatic six months extension of time to file your taxes, until October 17th, no questions asked.” The deadline is midnight tonight, which is three days later than usual, due to a holiday in Washington D.C. last Friday, April 15th.
