Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads says linebacker Jake Knott is already working out, again. The Cyclones leading tackler from last season missed Saturday’s spring game after suffering a broken arm in practice last week.

Rhoads says Knott is “one tough nut” who broke his arm on a Thursday afternoon, had surgery on Friday afternoon and was at practice late Friday. Rhoads says he asked Knott what he was doing, and he replied “We’ve got practice don’t we?”

Rhoads says Knott will be at full strength when the Cyclones gather for pre-season practice. He says it is two months tops when he will be completely released to play. Rhoads says the player who becomes the starting quarterback will be the one that has the best off-season.

There is a four-man race to take over for Austen Arnaud, including junior Jerome Tiller and junior college transfer Steele Jantz. Rhoads says accuracy is one of the things they are looking for and he says they all have to throw and improve on their accuracy.

Iowa State will open the 2011 season at home on September third against U.N.I.
