Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty says the G-O-P’s nominee has a shot at winning in 2012 because a key voting block has already made up its mind about President Obama.

“Independents, people who are, you know, going to decide the election in large measure, have really figured out that he has not turned the country around like he promised. The ecoomy continues to do very poorly and they don’t favor his reelection,” Pawlenty says. “And so I’m very optimistic about Republicans’ chances to win this election.”

According to Pawlenty, Obama has broken “most” of the campaign promises he made in the last campaign.

“For example he said he was going to cut the deficit in half in his first term. He’s violated that promise,” Pawlenty says. “He was a senator, he said, ‘Don’t raise the debt ceiling because that would be an example of failed leadership.’ Now he wants to raise the debt ceiling and much more.”

Pawlenty, a former two-term governor of Minnesota, campaigned in Sioux Center and Le Mars on Tuesday.  Pawlenty cancelled an event in Sioux City last night due to the Missouri River flooding. He’s scheduled to hold a town-hall meeting in Council Bluffs later this morning.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, another Republican presidential hopeful, campaigned in Mason City on Tuesday.
