Heavy rainfall has prompted Flood Warnings in parts of central and eastern Iowa. National Weather Service Meteorologist Brad Fillbach says most of the state received 1 to 2 inches of rain over a 24-hour period, while some locations are reporting 5 or more inches.

“There are 3 to 6 inch reports just south of Des Moines in Warren and Madison Counties,” Fillbach said. Weather spotters in St. Marys in Warren County and Swan in Marion County reported 5.4 inches of rain from early Thursday through this morning.

Fillbach says the Des Moines Airport reported 4.53 inches of rain, making it the third highest total ever recorded there over a 24-hour span in the month of June. Golf ball size hail was reported overnight in Warren, Polk, Marion, Story and Marshall Counties.

Today’s forecast includes a slight chance for rain, but the rest of the weekend should be dry. “The weekend looks nice,” Fillbach said. “We should see mostly to partly sunny skies with temperatures in the middle 70s. On Monday, we have a slight chance of showers and storms and highs in the upper 70s.”

Flood Warnings are in place for Polk, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Iowa, Keokuk, Washington, Johnson, Wapello and Warren Counties. Six Iowa counties bordering the rising Missouri River are also under Flood Warnings.
