A new automated mobile speed unit operated by Des Moines police is already out of service after being hit by a teenage driver. The mobile speed unit was unveiled earlier this month to catch motorists who are speeding around Des Moines.

The vehicle is designed to compliment five stationary cameras mounted at busy intersections in the capital city that are snapping photos of those running red lights. Des Moines Police say 18-year-old Anthony Jolly is charged with failure to control a motor vehicle after his car hit the unoccupied police vehicle last Friday.

Damage to the mobile speed unit is estimated at $1,500. Jolly, who was not seriously hurt, told police he was trying to clear something from his eye when he crossed into oncoming traffic, hit a traffic sign, the police vehicle and then a tree.
