At least three people drowned while swimming in Iowa lakes and rivers this  July 4th weekend. Two Iowans drowned while swimming in the dangerous Mississippi River.

Authorities near Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin say 42-year-old Larry Sash of Hudson, Iowa disappeared while swimming with friends from a nearby boat Saturday night. His body was found the following evening.

The other victim was an 11-year-old boy who was swimming with three friends Monday near Sunset Marina in Rock Island. A translator for the family said the boy was an African refugee who moved to the Quad Cities two years ago with his family.

Another swimmer drowned in a lake late Monday afternoon at Hickory Grove Park in Story County. The Sheriff’s office reports the man, 24-year-old Mohammad Ashrafi of Marshalltown, dove into the water from a paddle boat and resurfaced but was struggling to stay afloat. Friends tossed him a lifejacket, but he could not reach it and went under again. His body was recovered several hours later.
