A Newton man was sentenced to the maximum amount of prison time Monday for his conviction in the death of his fiancee. Forty-three-year-old Jay Dee Mack was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He had been charged with first-degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of the lesser of second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Angelina Ancer last October.
He had testified that he shot Ancer during a confrontation that was part of what had been years of threats along with physical and verbal abuse that started soon after he moved in with her. Experts also testified that Mack had a blood alcohol content around three times the legal limit at the time of the shooting.
Mack will have to serve 70% of the sentence, or 35 years, before being eligible for parole.
