If you’ve always wanted to rappel off the side of one of Iowa’s tallest buildings, the Special Olympics of Iowa is holding a fundraiser this week you may want to check out. Jeanette Steinfeldt, development director for Special Olympics of Iowa, says the event is known as “Over The Edge.”

Thrillseekers will be rappelling off the Financial Center in downtown Des Moines, which is 345-feet tall. To take part, you need to raise at least $1000 for Special Olympics. You also need to be at least 14 years old and weigh between 140 and 300 pounds. Steinfeldt says previous events have been a big success.

Last year, about 90 people went over the edge and raised more than $125,000 for the games. She says participants will get the chance to practice rappelling with trained experts on the day of the event.

You’ll be taken to a training wall that’s about four stories high to get a feel for the ropes, after which, you’ll be taken to the top floor to make the big leap. The event is scheduled for Wednesday (September 21st). For information, visit the Special Olympics of Iowa website: “www.soiowa.org“.
