A new FBI report finds the number of violent crimes is down in the U.S. for the fourth consecutive year — and the overall violent crime rate in Iowa declined during 2010 as well.  

The number of violent crimes reported in Iowa fell nearly two percent in 2010 compared to the previous year. The U.S. crime rate declined more significantly, by six percent. 

There were 39 murders reported in Iowa during 2010. That’s two-and-a-half percent more than in 2009. There were more than 800 rapes reported in Iowa last year; a six percent decrease. And there was a nearly 16 percent decrease in the number of robberies reported in the state.
