Study shows more materials being recycled, saved from landfills

A new study shows Iowans are sending fewer recyclable materials to the landfill, but there’s still room for improvement. Brian Tormey, chief of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Land Quality Bureau, says the results show Iowans are recycling more materials than the time of the last studies in 2005 and 1998.

“There’s a lot less paper (in landfills), a lot less aluminum cans and plastic beverage containers. So, that shows our recycling programs are effective,” Tormey said. The study involved nine Iowa landfills and 62 material categories. It shows paper and organic matter each make up 25% of the products going to Iowa landfills. Plastics account for 16.7%.

The report also breaks down the amount of trash coming from residences and commercial industry. Tormey is surprised with the amount of cardboard going to landfills from businesses. The report shows over 13% of the material being sent to landfills from the industrial sector is made of cardboard.

That compares to just 4% among homes and apartments. “That tells us we need to find a way to get to the commercial sector and recycle cardboard,” Tormey said. One of the hurdles to cutting the amount of cardboard going to landfills is the lack of recycling programs in much of rural Iowa.

“How we develop the infrastructure to collect cardboard from the commercial sector in rural areas is something we need to think through,” Tormey said. Around 13% of the organic matter going to landfills is food waste. Tormey says Iowa could reduce that food waste by following strategies developed by the E.P.A.

The effort targets leftover food from large stadium events, college and university functions, and grocery stores. Tormey says that food waste, if it’s still edible, is directed toward food kitchens or homeless shelters. A D.N.R. program designed to divert hazardous materials from landfills appears to by paying off.

Tormey says those items include automotive products, household cleaners, pesticides and paint. The 1998 report found hazardous materials comprised 1.4% of the waste going to landfills. Now, that total is down to 0.2%.

DOT makes changes to 511 traffic website

The Iowa Department of Transportation has made some changes to the traffic cameras and speed sensor information it provides on its website. Spokesperson, Sinclair Stolle, says they’ve integrated all that information into one site.

Stolle says they’ve been in the process of migrating the streaming video to the main 5-1-1 website and have added the eastern Iowa cameras onto that site along with the streaming video. The eastern Iowa cameras used to be on a different site. Stolle says you can now get on-line and see how fast traffic is moving and also see that via the cameras in a better format.

She says the links on the site will show you the speed sensors and cameras only, but you can click and pull up other links such as road closures. Stolle says these cameras are to help you navigate the busy highways and should not be confused with the local government cameras used to enforce traffic laws.

“These are purely for just monitoring traffic, this does not have anything to do with law enforcement at all,” Stolle says. Stolle says the information has become a “must have” for people as they travel, and they’ve tried to accommodate all the various devices people use.

She says they have three different formats to try an accommodate the various interned connections and devices, from a full feature website with good bandwidth and a streamline site that has a simple static map. Stolle says the traffic cameras and speed sensors are a popular part of their traffic information.

Stolle says they had about 6 million web visits to the 5-1-1 sites in 2010 and so far this year they’ve had a little over 3 million. You can access all the information at: www.511ia.org.

Santorum says GOP dissatisfied with perceived front-runners

Rick Santorum

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum says Saturday’s straw poll in Florida shows the Republican race is wide open and neither Mitt Romney nor Rick Perry have an edge.

“People are tired of being told that, you know, these are the only two candidates they get to choose from, because they’re not particularly happy with either of those two candidates,” Santorum said today in Des Moines, “and they’re looking for somebody else.”

Atlantic hosts Coca Cola Days

America’s favorite fizzy beverage is the focus of a weekend celebration in southwest Iowa. Atlantic calls itself the Coca-Cola Capital of Iowa and the town is popping the top on Coca-Cola Days. Meghan Roberts, director of the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce, says the event draws collectors and vendors from across the country.

“We look forward to seeing them every year and they look forward to coming here,” Roberts says. “We usually have different people coming in to see what they have for wares but these collectors travel to different shows all over the United States all year long. Atlantic is one of their routine stops now.”

This is the second-largest convention of Coca-Cola collectors in the U.S., second only to Atlanta, Georgia, the home of the popular soft drink. Roberts says collectors of Coke memorabilia are well known for their expertise about the product and are excited to share their knowledge with others who may be just getting into the hobby.

“Coca-Cola collectors sometimes will collect a certain genre of signs or bottles and they all have stories to go along with every piece they have,” she says. “It’s very interesting to sit down and have a conversation with them.” Atlantic is home to the Coca-Cola Center and Museum at 207 Chestnut Street. Today (Saturday), there’s a Show, Swap and Sell event from 9 A.M. until 2 P.M. at the Herring Building, along with a Collectors Showcase.

The annual Coca-Cola Days parade begins at 4 P.M. and is open to all individuals and groups, but the children’s entries will be judged and awarded prizes. Each float must have a tie to the Coca-Cola theme. Events runs through today (Saturday). For information, visit “www.atlanticiowa.com

Caucus date may move forward

Iowa’s Caucuses are currently scheduled for February 6, 2012, and the deadline for officials in other states to set the dates for their presidential primary and caucus elections is October 1.

However, Arizona has already moved its primary up to February 28 and other states, including Michigan and Florida, are considering that same date. February 28 also is the current date for the “First in the South” Primary in South Carolina. Iowa Republican Party chairman Matt Strawn says it’s likely South Carolina will move its date forward, prompting similar moves in the three other early voting states of Nevada, New Hampshire and Iowa.

“I’m going to be cautiously optimistic that we can stick to the February 6 date, but even if we have to move it, there’s not going to be that rush to the start of the year like we saw four years ago.”

The 2008 Iowa Caucuses were held January 3.

“It is certainly my hope and I’m working to make sure that Iowans are not Caucusing simultaneously with their New Year’s,” Strawn says.

According to Strawn, there are two key factors prompting other states to stay in their traditional position in the presidential election calendar rather than moving forward.  Strawn says the 2008 election and the long-running contest between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton showed states could have an impact on determining a presidential nominee far into the campaign season rather than just at the beginning.

“A number of the states have very difficult financial constraints and those states that pay for their own primary elections have decided to move them back to maybe general primary election dates in their states,” Strawn says, “so I think state budget reasons have forced a number of states to move back as well.”

Florida officials plan to announce the date of their state’s primary on September 30, right before the October 1 deadline.  Republican National Committee rules allow only four states — Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina — to hold presidential election contests in the month of February.  States which break the rule and schedule voting in February will lose half their delegates to the party’s national convention, which means a loss of influence for states if the nominating contest goes all the way to convention.

Iowa faces unique defense this week

The Iowa Hawkeyes close out non-conference play at home against Louisiana-Monroe. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Warhawks have a a unique style on both sides of the ball. He says it’s like last week, if you don’t cover it, they will have big plays. Ferentz says they haven’t played a defensive scheme like this for several years, so they will have to work on it.

Ferentz says Louisiana-Monroe’ defense plays with three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs. He says it’s different than what they see normally. Ferentz says they would like to play well heading into their off week. He says winning the game is the biggest thing, and improving is the next.

Ferentz says September is an important month to determine where they are going and he says “we have got to keep the foot on the gas” in terms of their development.
