Many Iowans will be kicking on their furnaces for the first time in a long time this week. National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Boksa says cold air from Canada will descend on the state, bringing some of the coldest temperatures of the season.
“We’ll have highs in the mid to upper 50s today and lows in the 30s and 40s tonight,” Boksa said. “By Wednesday, we’re looking at highs in the 40s.” There’s a chance for temps to dip below freezing Wednesday night through Friday morning.
Just how cold it gets will depend on cloud cover. “If low clouds do materialize, we won’t maximize the coldest temperatures that we could. But in areas that don’t receive cloud cover, we could see temperatures easily in the mid 20s for lows and lower to mid 40s for highs,” Boksa said.
Aside from some light rain in parts of southern Iowa today, dry conditions are expected across the state the entire week.
