Two people are jailed in connection with an assault and a high-speed chase that began in Floyd County last night. The incident started at about 10 p.m. in Charles City after an assault in a department store parking lot.

Authorities say the driver, 22-year-old Leroy Hampton of Harvey, Illinois, took off southbound on the Avenue of the Saints reportedly in a stolen Cadillac. That’s when the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and the Charles City Police Department began chasing the suspect at speed in excess of 120 mph.

Bremer County deputies later joined in the pursuit. A passenger in the vehicle, 21-year-old Mario Howard of Dixmoor, Illinois, was also arrested. The chase ended near Waverly on the Avenue of the Saints when the suspects surrendered. Hampton is charged with eluding, possession of marijuana, assault inflicting serious injury, first-degree robbery and four moving violations.

Howard is charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana, possession of prescription drugs, assault inflicting serious injury, and first-degree robbery. Both Hampton and Howard were booked into the Floyd County Jail. Three people were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries from the assault, no injuries were reported during the chase.
