An emergency message at the University of Iowa caused a scare among some students last night. The message told students police were looking for a “man reported to have a weapon near campus.”

An Iowa City police spokesperson told Radio Iowa they were investigating a domestic situation where a man who had access to a gun allegedly made threats. She says the found the man, but he did not have a gun with him and no arrests were made.

The message was sent to students by the university, and not Iowa City police through what’s know as the Hawk Alert system. The first alert went out about 10:30 and a second message canceling the first alert was sent just after 11 p.m.
