The northwest Iowa town of Terril will be looking for a new mayor in January as the winner in this month’s election, 67-year-old Elwin Clark, died five days before the vote. Councilwoman Julie Thiesen said when Clark died a lot of people in the town of around 300 people didn’t know what to do, so she encouraged them to vote for Clark as a way to honor him.

Clark won the election. Current mayor Tim Fairchild will serve out his term through January when the new council is sworn in. The council will put out a call for those interested in becoming mayor, and if nobody petitions for a special election to fill the position, the council will appoint someone.

Fairchild had chosen not to run again. The election results were certified today.
