Some eastern Iowans are finding out the season of giving is very much alive and the generous spirit is spreading. It’s a new act of kindness, taking root in difficult times — paying off the layaway debt of someone in need. Someone started it.

Now others are doing it in cities across the country, including Davenport. WQAD-TV reports that someone who wishes to remain anonymous has paid off the layaways of four people. The early Christmas gifts represent hundreds of dollars.

One of the recipients is Katie Risdal, a single mom who is new to the Quad-Cities. She says holidays are hard because she’s starting over. But life is getting better – her layaways at a Davenport K-Mart have been paid off.

Ami Stone is the store manager. She says there are good people out there, and good people help in big ways.
