A man is hospitalized after being shot by a police officer early this morning in southwest Iowa. A release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety states the incident happened around 3:20 a.m. in Clarinda.

A woman called 9-1-1 to report a man was using a hammer to break into her apartment through a first floor window. The responding officer found the man outside the apartment and as he approached, the man turned toward the officer and began yelling at him.

Authorities say the man then advanced toward the officer with the hammer in his hand. The officer shot the man, who was taken to a local hospital. His condition in not known.

The case is now being reviewed by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The police officer’s name and the name of the man he shot are being withheld until tomorrow.
